Those far right badges were actually St George cross badges in aid of a local charity. Unfortunate if this offends criminals. Get your facts right stuart.

If this incident was indeed the result of "prickish" behaviour on the part of prison staff then it is to be condemned as an abuse whoever happens to be on the receiving end.

In that case, I think suing the prison authorities would be justified if it is the only way to get their attention.

During the first Gulf 'war' there was a random round-up and temporary jailing of foreign Muslim students in Leeds. Students I knew (one of whom had a letter in the Guardian supporting Rushdie, incidentally)had the same problem from prison staff, some of whom wore badges of far-right groups, so sadly, might just be that Leeds screws are still as prickish as they used to be.
On a lighter note - here in Isle of Man we asked the Department of Home Affairs if the exclusively Christian chapel planned for the new Manx jail meant they recognised crime & Christianity were inextricably linked. They never did answer, but rapidly amended their plans!

I know this is a simplistic point, but why would a "devout" Muslim, and by inference a deeply religious person living according to the tenets of their faith, be in prison in the first place? Surely they have been living a good, moral life and shunning crime - and if that's not the case, why should their faith be considered at all?

They gave them a choice and did not force them to eat ham.

I sincerely hope that this is tossed out of court in the same way that other egregious lawsuits have been stopped at the starting gate. A few years ago, an American judge rejected one tub's attempt to sue MacDonald's for his voluntary obesity.
