COME on, guys, make up you minds! Is it a ghost or is it a zombie? There is a difference, you know, as any horror film fan will tell you.
We are talking here about the apparition said by the Daily Mail to be haunting a sewage works in the seaside resort of Eastbourne in East Sussex.
Workers at Southern Water’s treatment plant in Eastbourne, East Sussex, said they have been scared to enter tunnels after being followed about by a “humanoid figure” as they went about their jobs.
Said one worker:
I believe in ghosts and I’m sure there’s something in there. I dread doing the night shift. It’s not funny going to work and worrying that a zombie might be around the corner.
Bosses at the works then allowed Mark Wey, another sewage treatment worker, to enlist the help of expert in these matters - parapsychologist Michael Kingscote. A Southern Water spokesman said:
Mr Wey has a personal interest in the afterlife and found our underground site at Eastbourne somewhat spooky.
The clairvoyant said:
There seems to be one particular area that’s giving people the creeps. People have seen and felt things.
Mr Wey added:
Michael instantly detected someone standing there, and he was suspicious there was something quite unusual there. The conclusion is, we can’t prove it is haunted because of strong electromagnetic fields, which can cause the illusion of being haunted, the feeling of being touched or watched, but there is definitely paranormal activity.
People feel uneasy when they enter the building and the hairs on the back of your neck go up. A lot of people don’t like going in there. You can hear voices in the tunnels.
Mr Wey said the figure, which followed workers about often laughed at them and staff could hear “muffled conversations” coming from behind the tunnel walls.

I hear muffled conversations all the time, particularly when in public places or when listening to Radio 4 with bass boost turned on… there must be some spiritual significance about these two paranormal hot-spots, and I’m having my radio and Newport high street exorcised on the sabbath lest it ever occureth again..
This looks like a job for Fox Mulder!
I remember camping out with the Scouts. (O.K. I lied about the god bit, but I wasn’t likely to do my duty to the Queen either). We used to tell ghost stories to make things more exciting and scare each other. I guess it must be rather boring working at a water works to, so I can see where this story comes from.
