THE broad streak of insanity that runs through the unnaturally large Phelps clan – who among them probably have far more nipples, fingers, and toes than evolution ever intended – surfaced again at the weekend when a fire took hold at a garage adjacent to Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas.
As fires go, this one was a major disappointment.
Today, the garage is still standing, and the God Hates Fags placards it harboured were untouched by the flames, according to this report.
But despite the fact that there is no evidence that this was the work of an arsonist, the Rev Fred Phelps, the most deranged Christian pastor in the multiverse – and that’s going it some – not only reckons this was a “hate crime” committed by “fags or fag sympathisers”, but also suggests that the church building itself had been attacked.
The 78-year-old retard, who takes delight in organising pickets of soldiers who have died in battle, is even more unhinged than we originally thought.
In a video on his God Hates Fags website, Phelps ultimately blames America’s judges – “unfaithful demons in black robes” – for the piddling little blaze.
Judges? Yep, those are the folks who apparently don’t take attacks on the church seriously, thus allowing:
Every crackpot in the land to believe he will be praised, not punished, if he takes a murderous shot at us. Without hesitation we charge the judges with setting the fire. And GOD charges the judges for setting the fire. Shame on you black robed monsters. You are going to Hell, every last one of you. Hell has enlarged itself just to accommodate you.
The paranoid Phelps also implicates “big media” – including the BBC – in “whipping the rabble into a frenzy against us”. Also to blame is “our filthy fag-riddled military”.
For all that, Phelps is profoundly grateful for the fire:
We, at WBC, thank God for the fire set at our church because 1) It is a token unto our salvation - for the Scriptures say we will be hated for Christ’s sake 2) You hateful rebels heap coal upon your own heads by seeking to harm the people of the Most High God 3) This message cannot be stopped until we are finished with our testimony, as determined by God from the Council Halls of Eternity. Your repeated attempts to defile the Bride of Christ only end in the purposes of God being served: His word is preached and His name is magnified all the more. Thank God for the WBC fire!

We need a Phelps in Britain to cause the final demolition of Christianity (or at least the kind with any political power) by virtue of making it look as demented as it really is. Stephen Green is far too coherent

I remember the programme Louis Theroux did on these loonies. What I found most disconcerting was the attitude of the women of the clan. Obviously possessed of some intelligence, they stll refused to reject their leader’s vile views.
