VINDICTIVENESS and sheer stupidity combined this week to produce one of the dumbest church signs ever seen on the planet. And that’s going it some!

The sign outside Blacklick’s Havens Corners Church in Ohio read “I kissed a girl and I liked it, then I went to Hell.”

It was senior pastor David Allinson’s furious response to the chart-topping song by pop artist Katy Perry “I Kissed A Girl.”

But the thicko Allinson didn’t quite think the sign through properly. All it did was confuse those who saw it, so within 24 hours it was removed.

According to this NBC report, Allinson set up the sign because he was very concerned about the implications of the song for teenagers, and what he called a music video so suggestive it borders on pornography.

If anyone’s seen the video and understands how lewd and suggestive the video is for this song, that is not something young people should go toward.

He thought the message would be a loving way to remind teenagers that the Bible denounces homosexuality.

Good grief. Threatening people with hell is loving? Just how twisted can these barmy Christians get?

Here’s what sent Allinson ballistic:

  1. Aiieee!! Girl kiss girl make Sky God heap angry! He smite village if girls not make sacrifice of clothes then wrestle in plenty blancmange. Probably worth try, is main bullet point here.

  2. The sign is redundant. “Liking it” is not a condition of sinfulness. While (A) some sins are fun and (B) some sinners enjoy their sins, the two sets (A) and (B) are not identical.

Proof 1: Some sinners do not enjoy their sins (hence the rituals of confession, self-flagellation, et cetera).
Proof 2: Some sins could never be enjoyable except to a minority (e.g., coveting your neighbor’s livestock).

Therefore the correct message would be:

“I kissed a girl and went to hell.”

This more succinct message is also more efficient in that it casts a wider net with which to catch more sinners of both genders.

  3. Has the church set up a counselling service for terrified boys who sneaked kisses with girls, and were unaware that the sign referred to girl-on-girl action. If not, they damn well should!

  4. It’s a really dull, benign yet irratating song that will be consigned ‘One Hit Wonder’ hell. Any Christians who give it more than a moments care are mental, not to mention clearly appalled at their own interests in girl on girl action.
Plus, whilst I’m on a roll here, how come there aren’t any/enough decent, heart felt and sincere song about homosexual love? Any songs about ‘love that dare not speak its name’ are confined to ‘novelty’ records and then kill the career of the artist recording it! The only sort of exception I can think of is Kate Bush (Kashka from Baghdad) and that wasn’t realised as a single! I’d be delight to be proved wrong obviously.

  5. Yeah, stuff like this with make the girls practice Wicca and the boys homosexual and/or get drunk and tell their folks to screw themselves because the sign makes in sound like the female species are the gateway to hell. Thanks you, Pastor Ding-Dong, for damning the human race because of a POP SONG!

BTW, “I Kissed a Girl” was first sung by “Jill Sobule” in the 90s and the video wasn’t that suggestive. Just hald holding and stuble glances from both women and for some reason, Fabio was in it! Don’t ask me, the 90s was a strange and crazy decade!

  6. Any church that portrays God in a way that is anything other than loving, caring, and accepting of all people is not teaching the gospel, which is what we are all called to do. I find it extremely sad that we are not any further along in our society that we are still stoning people. This pastor should first apologize to God for portraying Him in this way and then apologize to everyone else especially his congregation for not having enough faith in them that a simple song would cause them to stumble. Basically whether you think a homosexual person is going to hell or not it’s never been the church’s purpose to condemn anyone. The message is clear “Christ in you is the hope of glory”. Unfortunately the church points fingers instead of instilling this message into people, which is the only thing that brings true peace to everyone. And whether or not you believe in God or not everyone would like to have peace in their lives.

  7. Jill Sobule’s “I Kissed A Girl” (different song; same theme) from 1995 caused a similar controversy then, only now the religionists are more powerful and more vocal.

I find it amusing that Katy is the child of two church pastors. :)

  8. Jill, you wrote ‘it’s never been the church’s purpose to condemn anyone.’ Well, something has clearly been going badly wrong for nearly 2,000 years.

  9. Valdemar you’re right something has been clearly going wrong. And that is the heart of the problem. It should not have been the “church’s purpose” meaning I think they thought that’s what they were supposed to do but it’s not what the church was called to do. Unfortunately most church’s/pastors/leaders have instead of interpreting the Word as God wrote it have either twisted it to make it condemning or they’ve just taken cues from the people they’ve heard this hate spewed from.

  10. Trish wrote: “Any church that portrays God in a way that is anything other than loving, caring, and accepting of all people is not teaching the gospel……” What a funny thing to say. The Bible itself portrays god as hateful, vengeful, intolerant and judgemental. I find it extremely sad that society and people still cling to ancient mythlogical and supernatural beliefs………….

  11. Valdemar I apologize you addressed your entry to Jill and I didn’t realize you meant me. I meant that God does not intend for the church’s purpose to be to condemn but they’ve done so anyway. Some church’s may have done so out of malicious intent but others I think do it because they think it’s what God wants, but it’s not.

  12. “I think they do it because they think it’s what God wants, but it’s not.”

Gosh Trish, how can you know what god wants when it should be obvious that gods are a figment of the imagination?

  13. I’ve always thought that, since God is apparently male and omnipotent, he can see through walls and ceilings… Any other male with those powers would be amazingly pro-lesbianism.

  14. I agree. The content of the sign is not loving. If that was indeed his intent, then he missed the mark.

Nonetheless, if someone wants to examine what the scriptures say about sin, which includes homosexuality, and namely so in this case, please click the link associated with this post and examine for yourself.

If one has not given his life to Christ, then I don’t expect that person to hold Christ’s standards; however, IF one considers himself a follower of Christ, then in turn you imitate Christ and aim to be like him and please the Father…which cannot be achieved by willfully practicing sin.

    Thanks.

  15. Neither the Jewish Bible nor the Christian Bible says ANYTHING about lesbians.

  16. I can speak only for the experience I’ve had in my life and how I know that the presence of God in my life has saved me from my own destruction. There is a 66 chapter book explaining to everyone in great detail every situation in life and how to handle it. I know it works because the blessings of God in my life amaze me everday. I’m not naive or brainwashed, no one forces me to believe. What can I say, “I found a Savior and I like it, the taste and peace and grace.” I know the quality of life I have is because of what I believe, my life doesn’t spiral into chaos everytime a catastrophe hits. If one doesn’t believe in God at all then this sign shouldn’t offend you. After all if one doesn’t believe in God then Hell doesn’t exist either. I don’t claim to know everything but I do know that the Father does not want Christians to be condemning to anyone whether they agree with their lifestyle or not. What I am trying to say that as a Christian I do not agree with the sign and I’m offended by it. I think this pastor along with thousands of others have tried to shove their religion down people’s throats in an effort to bring them to Christ. I agree that they’ve failed miserably and should be ashamed of themselves. I believe whether a person is gay, lesbian, straight, bi, or trans sexual I have no reason to believe that, that person isn’t going to heaven. The scriptures say simply this, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and have faith that He is the Savior of the world and that is the only requirement for heaven. Being a Christian should not be used as a fire insurance policy. Being a Christian is like going on an all-inclusive cruise. Everybody on the boat is headed to same destination (heaven) but you can choose to stay in your cabin until you arrive and not enjoy all the ammenities on the boat or you can come out and live a little and enjoy the journey.

  17. I get great joy from the fact that Katy Perry appears to be a normal, sane human being despite being raised by two barking mad fundies. (BTW, I must write a poem than matches fundies with undies. Something involving Palin perhaps?)
